We provide advice on employment law matters to many clients, in all different sectors. Our employment lawyers have many years of experience in all aspects of employment law and regularly deal with companies who employ 1 to 20,000 employees.
We believe that to give you the right advice, we first need to understand you and your business, and then tailor our approach to meet your requirements. We know how lawyers can get a bad reputation with their clients, and so we believe in being upfront with you from the beginning and building a relationship. We don’t believe in giving our clients unrealistic expectations, and we foster a straight talking and transparent approach, no matter what the issues are.
We can assist you with the everyday matters, such as providing contracts and policies, sickness absence management, handling Employment Tribunal claims, and dealing with performance and conduct issues. We can also assist you with the not-so-everyday matters, such as claims under the Agency Workers Regulations 2010, cross border TUPE transfers, corporate manslaughter policies and director or partnership disputes. Plus we can help with everything in between. Put simply, when you need us, we can help you.
Our employment team strongly believes that prevention is better than cure, so we help our clients to put the systems and procedures in place to avoid any nasty surprises, or at least be well equipped to deal with them quickly and cost effectively if any do arise.
We know that there are a lot of lawyers out there, and we know that you want what is best for your business. We make sure that we explain things to you clearly and concisely, without trying to teach you to be a lawyer (unless you’d like us to!), and we try to add value at every turn. We believe that by doing this we give you the peace of mind to enable you to run your business, knowing that everything behind the scenes is being done properly.
We are commercial, collaborative and pragmatic. You can trust us. We are your employment lawyers.
The work which we undertake
We can draft and advise on basic contracts of employment, consultancy agreements, service agreements and an agreement with any outsourcing provider.
We are experienced at producing and advising on contracts with the people you engage within your business.
Whether it’s a redundancy or a reorganisation exercise, a settlement agreement or sensitive negotiations with a senior member of your team we are experienced in ensuring that the best available outcome is achieved and that properly drafted legal documents are put in place to protect the parties.
We give responsive and commercial advice in respect of HR issues. Whether your query relates to a complex absence management issue, a disciplinary or grievance hearing, a reorganisation or a restructure, we’re here to help you navigate the issues and deliver a result which achieves your objectives whilst minimising your exposure to claims.
If you’re faced with a claim against your business in the Employment Tribunal, we can help. We get to the heart of the issues at an early stage, providing advice based on your preferred outcome.
We aim to work alongside you in a cost-effective way, giving you the assurance of knowing that you have someone reliable firmly at your side.
We can undertake all aspects of litigation from initial advice, through to advocacy in the Tribunal itself. We work alongside barristers, striving to ensure that the most commercially effective route is taken.
Business Protection and Retaining Talent
When you find great employees, you’ll want to keep them (and to do your best to stop them from leaving and taking your clients with them). We can help with both the carrots and the sticks (articles by our team on protecting your business from exiting employees are here). We work with clients in preparing contracts and policies which work to protect their businesses from exiting employees. When the preventative steps don’t initially stop problems, we are by your side in using the court to protect your business.
There are various ways in which an employer can incentivise key staff. Employee share option schemes are one means of doing so, others include bonuses and/or benefits. We can provide support and advice with these.
We work with exiting employees advising them as to the enforceability of their contractual terms and on strategies to minimise the risk of litigation. When litigation can’t be avoided, we can deal with the court proceedings.
We have experience advising clients in connection with negotiations with trade bodies and unions. We can assist you to draft and negotiate collective agreements.
We work in collaboration with you, gaining an understanding of how your business works then striving to help you to promote harmonious relations with others. We help you to find the right balance between the requirements of your staff and the requirements of your business.
On the sale or purchase of a business or on the change of a service provider we are experts in identifying the issues and advising as to the necessary steps to achieve a smooth transition of employers. We have been involved in TUPE transfers from 1 to 2,000 employees and can help you to deal with the practical and legal issues.
